Glorifying God by caring for children, youth, and families since 1904
Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth & Families was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1947. Our Tax ID number is 56-0538018. Our ministry was established as Mountain Orphanage in 1904 and we have been located on our current campus since 1923. We are not owned or managed by the government, except as NC licensing and other laws apply.
Children and Youth Served
After their homes are deemed unsafe or unhealthy, children are placed in our care by the court system and Department of Social Services in their home county. We serve children from birth through college age and beyond. Many of our children have been neglected, abused, or abandoned. Some stay with us for only a few weeks, while others are with us until they reach adulthood. We put to bed up to 110 children each night, and serve 150 to 170 children annually.
Service Area & Accreditation
Licensed by the state of North Carolina, we primarily serves children from western part of the state; however, we accept children from other regions. Black Mountain Home is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA).

Our mission is rooted in faith, excellence, and a deep commitment to the children, youth, and families we serve. Our Core Values—Christ-Centered & Biblically-Based, Excellence, God-honoring Relationships, Spirit-Led, and Intentional Stewardship—are the foundation upon which we build our ministry, guiding every decision, interaction, and initiative. These values are not just words on paper; they represent our collective identity and the standard by which we measure our impact.
Christ-Centered and Biblically-Based – Believing in the truth and authority of God’s Word, the Bible, we see Jesus Christ as the perfect model for our lives and believe that our central aim is to faithfully follow His teachings and emulate His devotion to God and service to others.
Excellence – Excellence is the steadfast dedication to biblical teachings, striving for moral integrity, righteousness, compassion, and wisdom as exemplified by the scriptures. Excellence requires being rooted in our accountability to God as we strive for the highest quality in programming, operations, and individual actions and relationships.
God-Honoring Relationships – We are dedicated to fostering vibrant, authentic relationships rooted in love, respect, and Christian unity. Our relationships extend to our staff and the children, youth, and families we serve as well as alumni, donors, volunteers, and community members. Reflecting Christ’s love in relationships means being present for both the significant and common moments in the lives of youth and staff. We believe that relationships should promote respect, trust, and genuine connection through openness, kindness, honesty, and collaboration.
Spirit-led – Being saved by faith in Jesus Christ, filled by the Holy Spirit, and anchored in God’s Word, we prayerfully seek and trust the guidance of our creative and faithful God, knowing that the fruit of the Spirit should be evident in all we do.
Intentional Stewardship – We are faithful stewards of the resources entrusted to us. We wisely and attentively manage the time, talents, people, and resources entrusted to us by God’s benevolence and the sacrificial giving of our donors to maximize our impact. We work strategically, transparently, and collaboratively to support and build lasting relationships with the children, youth, and families entrusted to our care. We nurture a culture that values lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
